Barak Herut has a Ph.D from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1992). From 1997 he has been a senior scientist at the Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research Institute and between 1996 to 1999 he was head of the Marine Chemistry Department. He has been a visitor professor at the College of Oceanic & Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University (USA). He has been studying the levels, distribution and sources of trace elements and nutrients in the SE Mediterranean (especially along the Israeli coastline) and in atmospheric precipitates. He is coordinating the Israel's National Monitoring Program of trace metals and nutrients along the Mediterranean coast. He has worked on several geochemical studies in the SE Mediterranean and the Dead Sea.
