Frede Thingstad is a professor in Marine Microbiology at the Dept. of Microbiology, University of Bergen, Norway. He has earlier been studying the functioning of the microbial food web (phytoplankton, bacteria, viruses, and protozoa) in the phosphorous deficient environments found in the fjords of western Norway and in the western Mediterranean. The work has led to idealised mathematical models for the microbial population dynamics. These will be applied in CYCLOPS to try both quantitatively to predict the expected responses to phosphate additions, and to analyse the responses observed in the experiments.

Much of his work on CYCLOPS is based on the previous MEDEA Project
